HOT STONE MASSAGE

Stone Massage is the application of hands in conjunction with stones that are formed by sedimentary and volcanic action. In essence, the hot or cold stones become an extension of the hands when used in a massage.

An adequate local application of warm or cold stones effects the immediate skin area and other areas in the body via the nervous system.

This unique therapy is a very effective modality, affecting both local areas of the body and the body as a whole.

Benefits of Hot Stone Massage include:
Stress Reduction
Increases heart rate
Relaxes connective tissue
Increases metabolism and elimination
Increases blood and lymphatic circulation

Stones created by volcanic action, such as basalt stones, are used as Hot Stones. The application of hot stones is beneficial when increasing the amount of blood supply to an area and is very effective when used for relaxation.

Stones created by sedimentary action, such as smooth stones found in some rivers, are used as Cold Stones. The application of cold stones is beneficial when reducing the amount of blood supply to an area and is also very effective in relieving sinus congestion. Cold stones may be incorporated into an hour or hour and a half massage as needed.

For more information on the benefits of massage, check out the American Massage Therapy Association web site.
